Lutz Fähser

German forester with experience in private, state and community forests.  Ph.D. in Forest Economics. Cooperation with forest related projects in 20 developping countries, mainly in the tropics and subtropics. Frequent contacts to Swedish forest owners and forest scientists. Since 1986 chief forester of the 5.000 hectare city forest of Luebeck/Germany.

Introduction of a new close-to-nature forest management concept in 1994. Based on this concept the first certifications of forests in Germany by "Naturland e.V." (1997) and FSC (1998) could be developed. Lutz Fähser cooperated closely with NGOs like Greenpeace, Robin Wood and Friends of the Earth, but also received awards from the European Paper Industry (1996) and the German Ministry of Environment (1998). In 2009, the German Federal Agency for Nature Conservation stated the "Luebeck Model" as "best practice" to be recommended for forestry in Germany.

Lecture (will be held in English):

Nature-oriented forestry

Characterization of the common forestry with man-made clear cuts, plantations, monocultures, even-aged stands (substitution forestry) in comparison to nature-oriented, mainly  nature-driven forestry with only single tree cuttings, natural regeneration, mixed forests, and uneven-aged stands (adaptation forestry). Evaluation of these different management systems with relation to the declarations and conventions of the Earth summit in Rio de Janeiro, to sustainability and to Agenda 21. Special emphasis on economic results, consequences for biodiversity and for climate change. Finally description of the "Lübeck Model" and its results since its establishment in 1994.
