Red Elk
Shown on Wednesday July 14, at 9:00 PM (English subtitles)
The sky elk, the rainbow elk, the thunder elk, the underground elk. We live as little mites in the elk’s fur.
After the last Ice Age, red elks were painted and carved on the rocks in northern Scandinavia and further east.
Among the Sami and other northern people, the myth about the cosmic elk and a sacred colour is still alive.
Red Elk is a Swedish nature documentary based on interviews with the Sami people and their relation to the Elk and the colour red. The starting point is the red rock paintings and carvings found in northern Scandinavia. The filmmaker Torkel Lundberg and artist Björnola Lind have followed and listened to people and nature in Sápmi and created a poetic film in which ancient myths are mixed with pragmatic reality.
The film is 30 minutes long and previously shown on Swedish Television in 2007. After the film, Björnola Lind leads a discussion with the audience.
